Message from the CEI President
Successful education reform needs to begin with evidence and data regarding what works, but also needs to be flexible enough to address the specific, but diverse, issues faced by teachers and administrators in individual schools. There are three key factors in determining education that works across a range of environments:
Getting the right people as teachers;
Developing them into effective instructors; and
Ensuring that the system is able to deliver the best possible instruction for every child.

It is not surprising that highly trained teachers are a key to the success of their students. Understanding how to create a positive and productive culture of learning and how to motivate students to make learning their own is a gift to any child. The question then becomes—in the current educational, economic, and political climate—how do we create a cadre of highly trained teachers who share a core knowledge of best practices and keep up to date in terms of content and technology? How do we practically apply the principles identified in the McKinsey report and do so in a way that can affordably and efficiently be replicated across our state, our country and the world, especially in the most challenging and under resourced inner city classrooms?
I believe that the Center for Education Innovation at Friends Academy has created a program for school improvement that meets the challenge of school reform. We do this by thoughtfully integrating technology into all classrooms and curricula, and developing teachers who use “teaching for understanding” methods. It sounds simple, but the results are profound – students who love to learn, classrooms that are centered around students’ unique learning processes, and teachers who are eliciting real academic improvements.
I’m proud to be a part of CEI, and I look forward to bringing its proven methods across the country and to many school districts in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Katherine Gaudet, President and Founder of CEI
