Since the establishment of the Center for Education Innovation 89 teachers have completed the WIDE course and 165 teachers have attended our courses and workshops. They have also welcomed CEI staff into their classrooms to model and assist with technology integration to improve their teaching practice.
We have accomplished a great deal together. We thank teachers for their high interest and continued attendance at our many after school professional development workshops and thoughtful participation in the Harvard WIDE course. This “Teaching for Understanding” model defined learning and understanding as:
* A capacity for students to think, develop and demonstrate understanding of targeted learning goals.
* Requires students to stretch their minds, thinking beyond what they have been told, to confront their ideas & perspectives & combine or contrast ideas in ways they have not done before.
* To build an understanding through a sequence of activities that gradually transfers independence & responsibility to learners.
* In addition, performances of understanding reminds teachers to guide learners work with new technologies in ways that develop and demonstrate understanding of goals, require students to think critically, and engage a rich range of intelligences.
